Though Next Art Chicago occurs only once a year, we are committed to being a part of the art community year-round. Whether it’s regular visits to galleries; introducing collectors, curators, and dealers to artists that have intrigued us; or supporting art institutions by attending benefits and programs, we are out and about in Chicago and beyond! To that end, we have been developing year-round programming and are about to launch our first initiative, The Collectors’ Colloquium, presented in partnership with Chicago Gallery News. This monthly event is designed for art enthusiasts interested in honing their collecting skills and developing a discerning eye. Experienced and engaging arts professionals including curators, collectors, art dealers, and artists will share tips and thoughts related to selecting and buying art. These informative sessions will take place at various art locations throughout the city starting in November. As I’m sure you are aware, October is Chicago Artists Month, and we salute the City’s impressive efforts to promote the remarkable and hard-working artists who make Chicago their home. You may not know this, but Next Art Chicago provides studio space at the Merchandise Mart for a group of six artists from the Chicago Artists Coalition. The Renaissance Society Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven: Van Kerckhoven’s artistic output includes a diverse array of mediums including painting, drawing, collage, computer animation, installation, and zines. The Renaissance Society will present four new bodies of work, including numerous new works on paper; an interactive computer animation; and a related series of computer generated prints. |
Chicago Cultural Center Write Now: Artists and Letterforms This exhibition's point of departure is how artists and designers use the letterform in their creative product. Participating exhibitors are predominantly, but not exclusively, Chicago-based. Selected artists include Jo Hormuth, Lora Fosberg, Ken Fandell, Jason Lazarus, Rahmaan “Statik” Barnes, Michael Thompson, Drury Brennan, Jason Pickleman and Joel Ross. |

October 23 The Computational Artist: Jason Salavon in Conversation with Hamza Walker An artist on the University of Chicago faculty, Jason Salavon uses computer software of his own design to manipulate and reconfigure preexisting media and data to create new works of art. In this conversation with curator Hamza Walker, Salavon shows and discusses his work—and shares the high-tech secrets of its creation. |

October 17 Wolfgang Laib in Conversation With Mary Jane Jacob and Nora Taylor Wolfgang Laib's installation for the Sullivan Galleries, Unlimited Ocean (opening October 25), comprises more than 20,000 piles of rice and pollen. As part of the Visiting Artists Program, he will discuss this work and his practice with Mary Jane Jacob, Executive Director of SAIC's Department of Exhibitions, and Nora Taylor, SAIC's Alsdorf Professor of South and Southeast Asian Art. |

October 27 Artist Talk: Jessica Stockholder Meet artist Jessica Stockholder, who has won international acclaim for her genre-defying multimedia installation pieces, which incorporate found objects and painting in bold, vibrant colors. As the newly appointed chair of the University of Chicago’s department of visual arts, Stockholder will add her distinctive voice to the dynamic community of art-makers and art-thinkers on campus and in the city. |

Chicago Artists Month The 16th annual celebration of Chicago’s vibrant visual art community – more than 200 exhibitions of emerging and established artists, openings, demonstrations, tours, open studios and neighborhood art walks take place at galleries, cultural centers and arts buildings throughout the city. Chicago Artists Month is presented by the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events in collaboration with the Chicago Office of Tourism and Culture. |
October 28 Exhibition Opening: UNFREE FREEDOM: An Exploration of Identity in Central Europe One of the defining events of the 20th century was the momentous fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, 1989. For many Central and Eastern European artists the political and social changes that followed the break-up of the Soviet- bloc, fundamentally changed the subject and style of their work. This Spotlight Exhibition examines how blacklisted artists responded to the restraints imposed on them under communist regimes and how their worked changed when those systems fell apart. |

October 28 Exhibition Opening: Crime Unseen Photography, with its special capacity for identification, observation, and implication, allows for unique access to and evidence of dramatic, often traumatic, events. All of the artists in Crime Unseen grapple with a re-telling of disturbing events, ranging from violent murder to “softer” crimes. |

October 29 Exhibition Opening: Immergence by Patrick Killoran Central to Killoran’s strategy is the artwork that pretends to be something it is not, often times transitioning the viewer from unwitting observer to analyst. The title of the work, Immergence or “to disappear into” points to how vending machines have been assimilated into our everyday reality. Located at the physical threshold between art gallery and artists’ studios, interacting with Immergence becomes a non-negotiable experience for visitors wanting to travel from one space to the other. |
